Benchmarks let you check how AI models actually do on real drawings. Each benchmark uses a fixed set of drawings and tasks and a clear scoring method, so results can be compared between models. These are the five most useful for estimators and contractors in 2026.

Why Benchmarks Matter for Estimators

Most AI takeoff tools are built on general models from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google. A new version of those models comes out every few weeks, and each one handles drawings differently. Vendor demos usually show the best case on a clean sheet. A benchmark shows how a model behaves across many real drawings, including the messy ones, and where it makes mistakes. That makes it easier to ask a vendor the right questions before you trust their numbers.

1. TakeoffBench

Made by: Handoff, an AI takeoff company, published August 2026.
Tests: a complete material takeoff from 10 real residential plan sets (floor plans, foundations, elevations, wall sections and roof plans) across nine trades, from concrete and framing to drywall and electrical. A quantity counts as correct when it is within 25% of the approved figure.
Result: the best general AI model scored 61 out of 100. Professional estimators scored 78. Lengths and areas, such as framing, roofing and siding, caused more errors than counted items like doors and windows.
Good for: seeing how far general AI is from a complete takeoff, and which trades are hardest for it.

2. Construction's Last Exam

Made by: Togal.AI, an AI takeoff company, launched October 2026.
Tests: 33 tasks taken from real takeoff work on construction plan PDFs, such as identifying elements and measuring every balcony in a building. Models get only the PDF and their own built-in tools.
Result: the latest models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI scored between 2% and 34%. The tasks are not public, and Togal ran the test itself.
Good for: a reality check on measuring tasks, where general AI is still at its weakest.

3. CaseVBench

Made by: COXIT, first results August 2026.
Tests: finding and outlining five object types (cabinets, countertops, elevations, floor plans and callouts) on 120 real millwork and casework sheets from 9 projects, checked against 1,430 objects marked up by experts.
Result: the best of 20 models, GPT-6 Astra, scored 92%, followed by Claude Opus 5.5 at 79%. Cost and time per page are reported for every model. CaseVBench is re-run as new models are released.
Good for: cabinet and casework shops comparing models on quality, cost and speed before choosing one.

4. AECV-Bench

Made by: AECFoundry, published January 2026, with open code and data.
Tests: counting doors, windows, bedrooms and toilets on 120 floor plans, plus 192 questions about drawings that cover reading text, counting and spatial layout.
Result: models scored up to 95% on reading text, but only around 40–55% on counting doors and windows.
Good for: understanding why reading a drawing is easier for AI than counting what's on it.

5. DrawingVQA

Made by: researchers at Louisiana State University and the University of Illinois, presented at CVPR 2026, a leading computer vision conference.
Tests: 92 questions engineers ask about 33 real "Issued for Construction" structural sheets, from reading a sheet title to connecting information across several drawings. Some questions cover quantities and code compliance.
Result: the best model, Gemini 3 Pro, scored 77%. Working professionals scored 95%. Quantity questions were the weakest area for every model.
Good for: structural and civil teams who want to know how well AI handles real engineering questions.

How to Read Benchmark Scores

A score is only meaningful next to the task behind it. A model that answers 95% of text questions correctly can still miss half the doors on the same floor plan. Look at three things before you compare numbers. First, what the model had to do: read, count, find or measure. Second, what counts as correct: an exact count, a box that overlaps the right object, or a quantity within a set range. Third, who it was compared with. A score next to a professional estimator's score tells you much more than a score on its own.

What They Show

AI is already good at reading text and finding specific objects on a drawing. Counting and measuring are still weak, and on full takeoffs professional estimators still score higher than any general AI model. A person should check every quantity. Pick the benchmark closest to your own drawings, because scores don't carry over from one type to another.

Before choosing a tool, a simple test helps:

Pick a past project you have already priced, with drawings typical of your work.

Run the tool on it without any manual help.

Compare the quantities line by line with your own takeoff, and note which items it missed or counted twice.

Check the time saved after corrections, not before.

A benchmark shows what a model can do in general. Your own drawings show what it will do for you.

Five benchmarks that test AI models on real architectural and construction drawings, from full takeoffs to counting doors, and what their results show for estimators.

[70,5

post-4508","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ai-for-small-business","category-business
["GET
